Biographies – The Capellaro Quartet

The Capellaro Quartet’ are a vibrant young quartet from Birmingham, UK. They are Simon Goff, Lise-Marie Steve (Violins), Victoria Strudwick (Viola) and Lucia Capellaro (Cello). Formed in 2009, they came together through a common interest in contemporary classical music and also a love for chamber music. Between them, their wide range of musical activities and interests has meant that they enjoy working on a range of music from Bach and Handel to the likes of George Crumb. They have recently worked with John Todd (Coull Quartet) and Robin Ireland (Lindsay Quartet).

Simon Goff was born in 1988 and grew up in Thirsk, North Yorkshire. He has studied with Penny Stirling and is currently learning with Alexandra Wood (BCMG, CBSO) at Birmingham Conservatoire where he is in his third year of the BMus(Hons) course. Simon has played for the York Guildhall Orchestra, Yorkshire Youth Orchestra, Vacation Chamber Orchestra and the CBSO Youth Orchestra as well as playing for all the major orchestras at Birmingham Conservatoire. Due to his wide musical interests, Simon also works regularly with musicians outside of the classical music genre, writing string arrangements for various artists and bands with recent work for Marrakesh Records in London. Simon has a keen interest in contemporary classical music. Both with the ‘Capellaro Quartet’ and other ensembles at the Conservatoire, Simon has worked with new composers to explore vibrant and exciting new compositions. He has recently joined ‘Thumb’, an ensemble put together to premiere works by composers in and around the Birmingham music scene. Simons second instrument is the Bass Guitar and has been taught by Fred T Baker and Herbie Flowers (David Bowie, Lou Reed). Using his abilities on both the Violin and Bass, Simon has developed a keen interest in Community music projects and regularly works along side Herbie Flowers at the Orpheus Centre. An arts centre for physically and mentally handicapped people set up by Sir Richard Stilgoe.

As part of her final assessment at Birmingham Conservatoire, Lise coordinated and played in a performance of Stravinsky’s ‘A Soldiers tale’ which comprised of a narrated story, played out in dance and music. Along side the ‘Capellaro Quartet’, Lise also is a member of the ‘Trio of the encounter’, an international trio formed of members from three different countries who have taken part in chamber music courses in both Italy and Spain, receiving tuition from Francesco and Stephano Parrino and Nathaniel Vallois.

Victoria is also a keen Violinist and has been taught by Graeme Smith and Oonagh Barry and is now studying with Alexandra Wood (BCMG, CBSO).
